Is affiliate marketing a good route for a Sri Lankan?
Yes for the right shape of creator, no for someone hoping for fast income.
Real structural advantages:
- Zero inventory or product creation. You promote something that already exists. If a Daraz product page converts, so does your link — you don't have to build the product, the fulfilment, or the customer service.
- Compounds with content. An affiliate link inside a blog post or YouTube video that ranks for a buying-intent search generates commissions for years after publish, not just once.
- Two very different geographic plays. Sri Lankan audiences convert on Daraz. International audiences convert on Amazon / SaaS tools / hosting / courses. Both routes are open — pick based on the audience you can actually build.

Honest caveats:
- The commission is set by the merchant, not by you. Amazon reduced rates across most categories in April 2020 and has narrowed the rules again in April 2026 (paid-ad disqualification, same-ASIN-variant onsite scope). Your income model can change on the merchant's decision, not yours.
- Almost all the value is in the traffic source, not the affiliate program. A 4% commission on Amazon is not the constraint — the constraint is whether anything you publish reaches enough buyers. The traffic-source pages below are the harder problem.
- Sri Lanka-specific tax withholding. Amazon Associates income to a Sri Lankan affiliate has a 10% treaty withholding via W-8BEN. Some older Sri Lankan guides claim 0% — that is wrong. Sri Lanka's US-treaty rate on royalties is 10%, so 10% is deducted before you receive the payout.
- April 2026 Amazon Associates policy changes. Paid-ad-referred sales no longer pay. Onsite commission is limited to the same ASIN variant as the linked product detail page. Content must show "commentary, analysis, or transformation for additional value" — bare product listings without editorial value are at risk.
How to actually start
- Pick your primary audience: Sri Lankan or international. This decision determines everything — which programs you join, which platform you build on, and which language you write in. Sri Lankan audiences convert on Daraz. Global English audiences convert on Amazon and specific SaaS/tool programs. Split-focus rarely works for beginners.
- Choose a traffic-source method. Affiliate income depends on your content platform, not on the affiliate program. Affiliate-specific scams and rule violations
The affiliate space has a few specific fraud patterns and rule violations worth knowing before you sign up:
- "Paid affiliate positions" or "master resale rights" that charge you to join what is really a pyramid structure where income comes from recruiting more buyers. Real Daraz Affiliate and Amazon Associates are free to join.
- Buying paid ads to send traffic to your affiliate link is now disqualified on Amazon Associates as of April 2026. Doing it after the policy change costs you the commissions you would have earned.
- Self-referral through your own affiliate links is prohibited on basically every program and results in account termination.
- Cloaking affiliate links or hiding disclosures violates program terms and, in some jurisdictions, consumer-protection law. Disclose plainly.

Tax on affiliate income
Affiliate commissions are taxable in Sri Lanka regardless of the paying merchant or the currency of receipt. Two specific considerations:
- Amazon Associates: 10% US treaty withholding via W-8BEN. Amazon deducts the 10% before you receive the payout. You cannot claim a Sri Lankan deduction for the same 10% (it is a US-side withholding on the US-source royalty payment) but the framework is set out in the US–Sri Lanka double-taxation treaty.

Some, sometimes, poorly. Affiliate programs generally prohibit link-stuffing spam in groups you don't own.
